Jamshedpur : Tatanagar Railway authorities are using CCT cameras installed at the station premises to help crack down on crime. Thanks to a growing network of security cameras, railway is using a new strategy to figh crime.
�Without security cameras, this would not have occurred. Our cameras will capture the crime, and police will use those images to find and arrest. With the significant investments we�re making in our extensive network of security camera,� noted an official. Security cameras, including those that allow for live monitoring of locations, have proven a vital tool in protecting station premises and discouraging criminal activity.
�The security cameras give us extra eyes on the system and add an important layer to our security efforts,� said the official.
On Saturday night the CCTV footages led railway police to arrest two chain-snatchers while they were trying to snatch gold-chain from a lady passenger at platform No 4 in Tatanagar station around mid-night.
After the Tatanagar railway station got CCTV cameras three months ago, this was the first time that the railway police got a success in detecting the crime. Those arrested have been identified as Arif Hussain (35) and Sanjay Behra (25), both residents of Chakulia in Ghatshila sub-divisions of East Singhbhum.
According to a railway police, a middle-aged woman was waiting for the Pune-bound Howrah-Pune Azad Hind Express at the Tatanagar station since around mid-night.
The police said two persons were closely following the woman closely in a suspicious way. As the duo tried to come closer to the woman again and again, she felt something wrong over there and stopped strolling having sensed some unseen trouble ahead.
The railway police arrived at the scene only after going through the footage of CCTV camera at the control room in Tatanagar railway administrative building.
The superintendent of railway police, Mritunjay Kishore confirmed that the two who were nabbed from the platform No 4 around midnight. The SRP pointed out that during the interrogation the arrested persons confessed that they were professional chain-snatchers and have committed a number of such crime at other railway stations and also at the steel city earlier.
The Tatanagar railway station is now well equipped with the 46-odd closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras.
Railway authorities said that the third eye sueveillance will help in checking crimes and monitoring movement of suspected persons.
According to him, during a recent training conducted by Calcutta-based firm Honeywell Automation, RPF personnel including assistant sub-inspectors and sub-inspectors learnt the nitty gritties of operating and monitoring the footage recorded by the CCTV cameras. Sources said that the CCTV cameras had been fixed in such a manner that the entire station except the parking and circulating areas had been brought under surveillance.
Railway officials said that The CCTV cameras have been installed at five platforms, entry/exit points and reservation counters. The entire project cost entailed an investment of around Rs 1.5 crore.
In all 25 CCTV cameras have found perch atop the main station building, entrance, waiting area besides platform Nos. 1, 2 and 3. The highly efficient 5-6 pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) cameras have been put up at the entry, exit points and crowded places like the ticket counters.
