Jamshedpur, Sep 3: Panic spread in Mango’s Pardih Chowk area on Wednesday afternoon after a sudden fire broke out in the seconds stockyard of Maruti Company under Azadnagar police station. A Ford Figo car parked inside the yard caught fire while workers were trying to start it after changing its battery.
Eyewitnesses said the vehicle burst into flames within moments, sending up thick black smoke that was visible from a distance. Local residents rushed to the spot, and police as well as the fire brigade were immediately informed.
DSP Sikandar Khan said the fire spread rapidly and could have engulfed other vehicles parked in the yard. “A major accident was prevented due to the quick action of the fire brigade,” he added.
Soon after receiving the information, Azadnagar police personnel and fire brigade teams reached the site. Fire fighters battled the blaze and managed to bring it under control after considerable effort. By then, however, the car had been reduced to ashes.
The incident created chaos for a brief period as people from the nearby areas gathered to watch. Local residents said the smoke spread quickly, triggering fear of a bigger mishap. No injuries or casualties were reported.
Police have started an investigation to ascertain the exact cause of the fire, though preliminary information suggested it started during attempts to start the vehicle after the battery replacement. Officials confirmed that while property loss occurred, a larger disaster was averted due to timely response.
