Budding managers of XLRI take leadership lessons at the Himalayas

Jamshedpur: Students of B-school Xavier School of Management, XLRI got an opportunity to learn the essential concepts of leadership in one of the outdoors most stunning yet demanding classrooms, the Himalayas. XLRI Adventure and Nature Club (known as XLANC on campus) in association with Fun Expedia, conducted Everest base camp trek for the students and faculty of B-schools nationwide.

More than 100 enthusiastic trekkers from reputed B schools such as IIM A, B, K, Ranchi, MDI, NITIE, NMIMS, SP Jain, XIMB, FMS and IMT participated in it. Prof AshisPani, Associate Dean Academics of XLRI Jamshedpur along with alums of IIM B and XLRI were also a part of this trek.

Everest base camp trek is a 15-day expedition which involves trekking in the Himalayas at various altitudes such as Phakding (8700ft), Namche Bazaar(11280ft), Dingboche (14300ft), Lobuche (16207ft) and reaching the Everest base camp which is at an altitude of almost 17600ft. All the trekkers reached the end point of the trek making this event a grand success.

The Everest base Camp Trek was an eye-opener. I am now confident that I can go for any other trek in the world. It is challenging but also provides you breath-taking views of the Himalayas,” said Arnav Singh Bist of XLRI, Jamshedpur who was on his first trekking experience in the Himalayas.

“I am glad I came for this trek. It was physically demanding but because of group energy and motivation it made the seemingly difficult trek an enjoyable journey. The accommodations in Kathmandu and on the trail were lively and very comfortable. It was a post-grad trip with a difference and I highly recommend it to other enthusiasts. says Vaishali Gambhir from IIM Ranchi.

All B school students recognize and appreciate the essential qualities of leadership like strategic thinking, decisive action, personal integrity, etc. Yet they also realise that converting such abstract concepts into practice is often an elusive process.

Indeed, few behavioural concepts defy translation into reality as much as those that involve leadership. Outdoor group activities like trekking, hiking and camping foster the necessary behavioural changes in participants to become better leaders.

The XLRI Adventure and Nature Club (XLANC) is one of the most active clubs on campus. Its vision is to help students develop leadership skills and managerial acumen through outdoor activities.

It provides the students with activities like Dalma trek, Everest base camp trek, rifle shooting, horse riding, laser tag and many more. All in all, it is the club which keeps the students sane and healthy to pursue excellence in every sphere; for a healthy body houses a healthy and productive mind.
