‘Brown sugar’ worth Rs 30 lakh recovered in Jamshedpur, two including West Bengal resident arrested

Jamshedpur, Feb 16: In a breakthrough, police seized 400 grams of ‘brown sugar’ by arresting two men from near Gharib Nawaz Colony under Jugsalai police station area late on Monday night. The cost of the narcotic drugs is estimated to be worth about Rs 30 lakh.

Those arrested were identified as Sadique Ansari (32), a resident of Muslim Bustee in Adityapur and Hasiqur Rahman (40), a resident of Bansgara in Murshidabad district of West Bengal.

The Brown sugar drug is an adulterated form of Heroin which comes from opium. Heroin is a semi-synthetic derivative of the drug morphine. Pure heroin is a white crystalline powder and is referred to as ‘white sugar’ by abusers. When the quality of heroin is poor, its color is no longer white, but brown, this inferior quality is called ‘brown sugar’.

Addressing the media, senior SP, M Tamil Vanan said that acting on a tip off that two persons were meeting near the Railway Over-bridge close to Gharib Nawaz Colony in relation to brown sugar at 10.30 pm, a team was set up to nab them.

“As we got a tip off, we set up a team of police officials headed by deputy superintendent of police (law and order) Alok Ranjan. As the information was confirmed, the police team surrounded the locality in plain clothes and as the two men met near the railway bridge, the team nabbed them. The team found two packets of brown sugar weighing 200 grams in each from them.  Then the police team immediately brought them to the Jugsalai police station where the two were interrogated,” said Vanan while addressing a press conference on Tuesday afternoon.

Vanan said Rahman who used the narcotic drugs from Murshidabad would supply it to the addicts in Jamshedpur and Adityapur in adjoining Seaikela-Kharsawan district.

Brown sugar is a sucrose sugar product with a distinctive brown color due to the presence of molasses. It is either an unrefined or partially refined soft sugar consisting of sugar crystals with some residual molasses content (natural brown sugar), or it is produced by the addition of molasses to refined white sugar (commercial brown sugar).

Vanan said recently the police had arrested three women for selling the narcotic drugs in small packets in Jugsalai. He said during investigation, one of the lady accused, Rashida Khatoo, had tipped off them that a man used to come from Murshidabad for handing over his local contacts.  He said the police had been working in the lead persistently and finally nabbed the man from Murshidabad along with a local addict.
