Brothers killed in late-night road mishap in Jamshedpur, Bistupur-Jugsalai road blocked in protest

Jamshedpur: Tragedy struck late Friday night on the Bistupur main road as two youths were killed in a horrific accident near the N-Road traffic signal post. The victims, identified as Akaash Nandi (30) and Kartik Nandi (25), both residents of Baldev Bustee in Jugsalai, were struck by a speeding trailer while returning home on a motorcycle. Akaash died on the spot, while Kartik succumbed to his injuries shortly after being rushed to the hospital.

The incident occurred around 11:30 p.m. as the two cousins were heading home after having dinner at an eatery in the Bistupur market. Akaash, who was riding the motorcycle, was turning towards Jugsalai when the trailer, speeding from the Bistupur Thana end, collided with them. The impact was devastating—Akaash was run over by the heavy vehicle, while Kartik was flung off the bike, sustaining severe head injuries.

Immediately following the accident, the driver of the trailer fled the scene. A police patrolling team, arriving soon after, rushed both victims to Tata Main Hospital.

Despite the doctors’ efforts, Kartik succumbed to his injuries shortly after his arrival at the hospital. Grieving family members, who had hurried to the hospital, were devastated by the loss of both young men.

Protest erupts over tragic deaths

The news of the tragic deaths spread quickly, igniting outrage in the community. Early Saturday morning, grieving family members and residents of Baldev Bustee took to the streets in protest. Around 10:00 a.m., they blocked the busy Bistupur-Jugsalai road near Jugsalai police station, demanding justice for the victims.

The protestors, including several women, called for a compensation of ₹50 lakh for the families of each of the deceased and demanded the immediate arrest of the trailer driver responsible for the accident. The blockade, which lasted for more than two hours, brought traffic to a standstill on one of the city’s major roads, causing significant disruption.

The protest continued until the officer-in-charge (OC) of Jugsalai police station intervened, promising swift action to locate the trailer driver and address the compensation demands. After assurances from the authorities, the protestors agreed to lift the blockade, allowing traffic to resume around noon.

Meanwhile, a case has been registered against the unknown driver of the trailer. Police have initiated an investigation, and efforts are being made to trace the vehicle involved in the accident.

The sudden and tragic deaths of the two cousins have left the Baldev Bustee community in shock, with family members and neighbors calling for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations and harsher penalties for reckless driving.
