Jamshedpur, July 28: Jamshedpur was once again at the forefront of cultural colours and sports, among other events, once the grand opening ceremony of Durand Cup-2024 got off to a pulsating start at the JRD Tata Sports Complex on Sunday, July 28 at 2:30 pm.

The mood was carried over as the whistle blew at 4 pm when Jamshedpur FC took up the challenge of Assam Rifles in the Group-D match.

Anticipation was high as the Indian Army organized an array of cultural activities to captivate the audience.

Highlights of the ceremony included a Military Dog Show, showcasing the agility and training of military canines, and traditional dances such as the Chhau and Paika Dances, which displayed the rich cultural heritage of India, particularly of Chhota Nagpur.

The event also featured a vibrant Nagpuri performance, adding to the cultural tapestry.

Adding a dynamic aerial component, the ceremony included a fly-past by helicopters, followed by an exhilarating skydiving display by paratroopers from the Akash Ganga Team of the Indian Air Force.

The skydivers’ precision and skill were met with awe and applause.

Additionally, there was a fixed-wing aircraft flypast, further demonstrating the prowess of the Indian Air Force.

The ceremony also featured a mesmerizing pipe band display, adding a musical element to the festivities.

Demonstrations of Kalaripayattu martial arts and the Khukuri dance highlighted the strength and discipline of traditional Indian martial practices.

The grand opening ceremony was not just a visual and cultural feast but also a significant moment for the state of Jharkhand.

The Chief Guest for the occasion was Jharkhand Health Minister Banna Gupta, who had the honor of inaugurating the match by kicking the football, symbolizing the commencement of the tournament.

This unforgettable event underscored India’s rich cultural heritage and the remarkable skills of its armed forces, setting a vibrant tone for the Durand Cup 2024 and promising an exciting series of matches ahead.

Lt General Ram Chander Tiwari UYSM, AVSM, SM, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Eastern Command and Patron, Durand Cup Organising Committee (DCOC), said, “The Indian Army is proud to host this prestigious tournament in Jamshedpur which has always been the beacon of grassroots development of the sport in the region. I am grateful to the Chief Minister and Sports Minister of Jharkhand and also to the TATA Steel Foundation in being there with the organising committee at every step of the conduct of the tournament. I look forward to a glorious edition of the Durand Cup and wish everyone involved in this year’s tournament all the very best.”
Addressing the audience, Shri Banna Gupta said, “This is a proud moment for the state of Jharkhand to host the prestigious Durand Cup for the very first time. Sports has been a part of our culture and we have produced some of the greatest sportspersons in the country. Jamshedpur has always been a footballing hub with the presence of TATA Football Academy producing some of the best talents in the country and the Durand Cup will take the popularity of football in the state to even higher levels and will inspire the youth to take up the sport as a career. I wish all the teams playing in Jamshedpur, especially our local side Jamshedpur FC and the organising committee the very best for a successful tournament.”
