Court directs BMC to re-upload Dia Mirza’s Diwali clip

The Bombay High Court directed the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation to re-upload actor Dia Mirza’s public awareness video. The video urged citizens to avoid bursting firecrackers on roads.
Mirza recorded the video under earlier court orders aimed at curbing air pollution. The municipal body had initially removed the clip following objections from political leaders.
A division bench expressed strong displeasure over political remarks against the actor. Justices Girish Kulkarni and Neela Gokhale emphasized that India remains a secular country.
The court stressed the importance of following judicial directions issued for public welfare. It reiterated that environmental awareness initiatives serve the broader interest of public health.
The civic body enlisted Mirza alongside other celebrities for its awareness campaign. Actor Madhuri Dixit and cricketer Ajinkya Rahane also recorded messages advocating responsible celebrations.
BJP leaders raised objections specifically against Mirza’s involvement in the drive. Mumbai BJP chief Ameet Satam and Mayor Ritu Tawde criticized her message.
Tawde accused the actor of pursuing a selective agenda against Hindu traditions. She claimed citizens did not need lessons on celebrating traditional festivals.
Dia Mirza defended her participation in the civic body’s public campaign. She stated that she recorded the message following explicit court directives.
The actor highlighted air pollution as a pressing public health concern. She urged people to adopt healthier practices during the festival of lights.
The High Court’s ruling reinforces judicial oversight on civic pollution drives. The decision mandates the restoration of the video on municipal platforms.
