Jamshedpur: Purnima Sahu, the daughter-in-law of former Chief Minister and current Odisha Governor Raghubar Das, has clinched a decisive victory in the Jamshedpur East constituency, representing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Sahu secured 1,05,111 votes, defeating her nearest rival, Dr. Ajoy Kumar of the Indian National Congress, by a margin of 42,586 votes. Independent candidate Shiv Shankar Singh finished third with 15,166 votes.
Sahu’s candidature was a strategic decision by the BJP, signaling continuity in Raghubar Das’s legacy in the constituency he represented for decades. The Avenue Mail had first reported her confirmed candidature from the Jamshedpur East seat on BJP ticket prior the announcement of Jharkhand polls. The report had created ripples in the local political landscape.
BJP leadership later formally announced Purnima’s name leading to rebel by Shiv Shankar Singh and Raj Kumar Singh, and contested as independents.
Dr. Ajoy Kumar, a former IPS officer known for his fiery rhetoric and dynamic persona, was expected to pose a tough challenge. However, his campaign failed to resonate with the electorate, as reflected in his tally of 62,525 votes. His defeat underscores the BJP’s robust organizational groundwork and the enduring appeal of the Das family’s political influence in Jamshedpur East.
Shiv Shankar Singh’s decision to run independently after being overlooked by the BJP led to a splintered vote among opposition forces, allowing Sahu to consolidate her lead early on. Despite his spirited campaign, Singh’s third-place finish highlighted the challenges faced by independent candidates in making significant inroads against major parties.
Purnima Sahu’s victory not only marks a new chapter for Jamshedpur East but also solidifies the Das family’s enduring political legacy. Her win demonstrates the BJP’s ability to maintain its stronghold in the constituency while leveraging the goodwill and trust built over years of consistent leadership.
