Jamshedpur, Nov 23: If you think you are living in the environmentally conscious city, Jamshedpur also known as the ‘Clean and Green’ city, it’s time for a wake-up call. Breathing the air in this location is as harmful as smoking 120 cigarettes a month that is 28 cigarettes weekly and 4 cigarettes per day. The Air Quality Index (AQI) in Jamshedpur recently recorded a concerning 260, placing the city’s air quality in the ‘Unhealthy’ category. On November 23, it had surged dramatically, highlighting the environmental challenges even in the most eco-friendly city. This shift serves as a reminder that no city, not even Jamshedpur, is immune to the growing threat of pollution.
The air quality is further compounded by other harmful pollutants. The levels of particulate matter, such as PM2.5 and PM10 are significantly elevated with PM2.5 at 84 µg/m³ and PM10 at 174 µg/m³. Carbon monoxide (CO) has reached 992 parts per billion (ppb), while sulphur dioxide (SO2) is at 6ppb. Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) stands at 14 ppb and ozone (O3) is at 20 ppb. These high concentrations of pollutants are a major cause for concern, contributing to the deteriorating air quality and posing serious health risks.
Delhi, which currently holds the title of the city with the highest AQI globally, is struggling with ‘Severe Plus’ pollution levels, while Jamshedpur ranks 85th among the most polluted cities globally. With such a ‘Poor’ AQI, the reality is alarming.
According to AQI standards, 0-50 µg/m³ is considered ‘Good,’ 51-100 is ‘Moderate,’ 101-200 is ‘Poor,’ 201-300 is ‘Unhealthy’ and 300-400 is ‘Severe’ with levels above 401 categorized as ‘Hazardous.’ These numbers are not just figures, they represent a growing public health threat. The effects of poor air quality can lead to various health problems, underscoring the need for preventive measures.
Prevention of Health Problems
The rise in AQI levels in Jamshedpur is a warning to prioritize health. Poor air quality can worsen asthma symptoms like wheezing and shortness of breath. Residents should limit outdoor activities, use indoor air purifiers and drink warm fluids to soothe respiratory issues. Wearing masks and avoiding smoky areas is essential for protection.
Allergies, sinus problems and cold or flu symptoms are also aggravated by pollution. HEPA air purifiers can reduce airborne allergens, while monitoring air quality and staying indoors during high pollution periods is crucial. Maintaining a strong immune system through a balanced diet, avoiding prolonged outdoor exposure and steering clear of indoor pollutants like candles are key measures for reducing health risks.
With the alarming AQI, the question persists: how can Jamshedpur retain its reputation as a clean and green city? The answer lies in collective action that is switching to cleaner fuels, reducing vehicle emissions and improving waste management. Individuals can also make a difference by using air purifiers, wearing N95 masks and limiting outdoor activities when the air quality is poor.
The time to act is now. Protecting our environment is no longer a choice but a necessity. After all, the true identity of a city is not just in its landmarks, but in the quality of life it offers its residents.
