BJP launches fresh membership drive across the district

Jamshedpur : The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has launched a fresh membership drive across the district on Tuesday.

The party is planning to include 50 lakh members in its fold by the end of March this year. A kiosk has been set up at Sakchi roundabout for the membership. Interested people can approach the kiosk.

The drive is part of a huge campaign of the party, which has set a target of 10 crore members in the country to be the largest political party of the world.

“The target which was to make 25 lakhs new members has been raised to 50 lakh after today’s discussion. 14 lakh new members have already enrolled till date under the ongoing started since November, 2014, with 10 lakh members from Bihar and 4 lakh members from Jharkhand. We aspire to take this number to 50 lakhs in Jharkhand,” said a senior leader.

A party leader said initially people would be given primary membership. Thereafter, details of the member would be sent at the block-level for scrutiny for verifying credential of the member and to check the entry of criminals and tainted persons in the party fold. One can become an active member of the party after remaining primary member for two years.

The registration for membership has been launched in two modes, manual and online. Registering manually, which is via mobile phones, is free of charges whereas a fee of Rs 1.5 is being charged for online registration. In regions beyond mobile connectivity, enrollment is being carried out by the conventional method of issuing receipts.

Old memberships are being renewed too. From April to June, after the culmination of membership drive, member identity cards will be distributed door-to-door and training camp for the new members will be organised in August, 2015.

The party has decided to move beyond its initial plan of recruiting members through technology-enabled platforms like online registrations or ‘missed calls’. The party is now trying to reach out to people directly to boost its membership drive.

Party workers will go to the villages, railway platforms, bus stands and other crowded places, informing people about the BJP’s membership drive, BJP sources said.

Initially, people would be given primary membership. After continuing as a primary member for two years, one would be eligible for active membership. The membership drive would continue till March 31, 2015.
