Thiruvananthapuram/Kollam (IANS): The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) achieved a breakthrough in Kerala by securing three Assembly seats, marking the party’s most successful performance in the state to date. The expansion of the party’s footprint concluded with a dramatic, last-round victory in the Kazhakootam constituency.
The Thriller in Kazhakootam
- Narrow Victory: Former Union Minister V. Muraleedharan defeated two-time CPI(M) Legislator Kadakampally Surendran by a razor-thin margin of just 265 votes.
- Final Round Surge: The contest saw multiple lead changes throughout the day before Muraleedharan surged ahead in the final stages of counting.
- Urban Competitiveness: The result highlights the BJP’s growing competitiveness within urban constituencies in the Thiruvananthapuram district.
Completing the Trifecta
- Victory in Nemom: Rajeev Chandrasekhar reclaimed the Nemom seat for the BJP. The party previously held this seat in 2016 but lost it to the CPI(M) in 2021.
- Success in Chathanoor: B.B. Gopakumar secured a win in Chathanoor by defeating CPI candidate R. Rajendran.
- Converting Vote Share: Gopakumar’s victory demonstrated the party’s improved ability to convert its vote share into actual seats.
A Shift in Political Momentum
While the party’s overall seat count remains modest, political observers view this “triple strike” as a significant shift in momentum. By moving beyond a merely symbolic presence, the BJP has established a more tangible electoral footing in a political landscape traditionally dominated by the LDF and UDF.
