Jamshedpur: Former MP and senior Congress leader Dr. Ajoy Kumar has accused the BJP of opposing welfare efforts for the poor, revealing their “double standards” on the issue of development. In a press statement released on Friday, Dr. Ajoy said the BJP talks about the development of the poor in public but actively works against their interests behind the scenes. As an example, he highlighted the BJP’s complaint to the Election Commission regarding the distribution of jerseys and shoes to underprivileged children, calling it an attempt to hinder social work.
Dr. Ajoy further criticized the BJP for filing a case in the Ranchi High Court to halt the Maiya Samman Yojana, a scheme aimed at benefiting disadvantaged groups. He argued that BJP leaders often make lofty promises about the upliftment of the poor, which later turn out to be empty rhetoric. “This is BJP’s true face,” he remarked, accusing the party of only paying lip service to the cause of development while acting to obstruct meaningful change.
He also accused the BJP of targeting him personally, citing an instance where a senior BJP leader allegedly lodged a complaint with the National Green Tribunal (NGT) seeking the demolition of homes belonging to poor families. Dr. Ajoy claimed that the BJP’s actions reflect its desperation to undermine him as they fear losing electoral ground in Jamshedpur East. He noted that the party has been unable to find a suitable candidate to contest against him, and is resorting to defamation tactics as a result.
Referring to a case filed against him in Bhubaneswar, Dr. Ajoy alleged that the BJP is orchestrating a conspiracy to tarnish his reputation ahead of the elections. “The public understands everything,” he added, expressing confidence that voters would deliver a decisive response to the BJP’s attempts to malign him. “The truth may be troubled, but it cannot be defeated,” he concluded.
The senior Congress leader reiterated his commitment to continue serving the underprivileged, stating that the BJP’s efforts to discredit him would not deter his work.
