BIS student chapter at IIT ISM Dhanbad to boost standards awareness

Jamshedpur, July 1: The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), Jamshedpur Branch Office, in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines), Dhanbad, inaugurated the BIS Student Chapter cum Workshop at the IIT ISM campus on Tuesday.

Kunal Kumar, Director & Head, BIS Jamshedpur, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest and formally inaugurated the Student Chapter. In his inaugural address, he highlighted the purpose of establishing Student Chapters in MoU partner institutes like IIT ISM Dhanbad. He elaborated on the role and responsibilities of BIS and the overall Standardization Ecosystem in the country.

Kumar further emphasized the scope and expectations from the BIS Educational Outreach Programme and underlined how collaboration with academic institutions can lead to a mutually beneficial exchange of knowledge, innovation, and standardization practices.

Professor Dheeraj Kumar, Deputy Director, IIT ISM Dhanbad, expressed his deep appreciation for BIS and reaffirmed the institute’s commitment as a proud MoU partner. He mentioned that several R&D projects in partnership with BIS are already being pursued by the faculty. He also highlighted that a dedicated BIS Corner has been established in the institute’s library to encourage access to Indian Standards and promote awareness among students.

Kaushalendra Kumar, Scientist-E, BIS, conducted a demonstration for students on the BIS Portal and shared key insights into the Guidelines for operating the Student Chapter.

The inaugural session was followed by an engaging workshop, which saw the enthusiastic participation of 60 students from the newly formed Student Chapter. The event concluded with a vote of thanks, marking a promising beginning to a long-term collaboration in the field of standardization and quality initiatives.
