BIS hosts industry meet in Jamshedpur to promote certification awareness

Jamshedpur, June 27: The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), Jamshedpur Branch Office, organized an Industry Meet-cum-Sensitization Programme at a city hotel on June 27, with the aim of encouraging industries to adopt BIS certification. The event targeted both industries that are yet to obtain BIS licences and existing licensees manufacturing additional products that also require certification. A total of 110 industry representatives attended the programme.

The event was graced by Braj Bihari Prasad, Quality Head, Tube Division, Tata Steel Ltd., and Santokh Singh, Vice President of the Adityapur Small Scale Industrial Area Association. In his inaugural address, Kunal Kumar, Director and Head of BIS Jamshedpur Branch Office, emphasized the need for wider participation in the BIS certification framework. He noted that over 750 products are currently under mandatory BIS certification and highlighted the growing number of Quality Control Orders (QCOs) across categories such as Cast Iron, Aluminium, Copper, Footwear, Toys, Ferro Alloys, Electrical Appliances, and Furniture. Certification for some of these items will become mandatory starting next year.

Kumar also spoke on the process of standard formulation, integrating sustainability in standards, and encouraged industries to align with national norms for ensuring product safety and quality.

He urged all stakeholders to regularly watch BIS’s weekly audio-visual bulletin ‘Standard Watch’ on YouTube.

Braj Bihari Prasad shared Tata Steel’s compliance experience with BIS and pledged support to MSMEs in implementing QCOs. Santokh Singh appealed to non-licensee industries, especially manufacturers of Cast Iron and Ferro Alloys, to obtain BIS licences promptly. The programme was interactive, and around 10 participants expressed immediate interest in applying for certification. Key topics included BIS functions, certification schemes, ISI mark procedures, and the Manakonline portal.
