Jamshedpur: Jharkhand Urban Development Minister Sudivya Kumar Sonu has assured the Jamshedpur West MLA Saryu Roy that the government will hand over the keys to the Birsanagar PM Awas flats to the allotted beneficiaries before June 15, 2026. This will allow the owners to inspect their flats and perform the traditional griha pravesh rituals.
Minister Sonu assured Roy during a meeting on Saturday morning. Following the minister’s commitment, Roy postponed his scheduled June 1 hunger strike outside the East Singhbhum Deputy Commissioner’s office. He has also informed the beneficiaries about this development.
In a press release, Roy highlighted that the economically weaker beneficiaries of the Birsanagar PM Awas Yojana had fully paid their financial shares three years ago, largely through bank loans. Despite this, they have yet to receive the keys to their allocated flats.
According to Roy, these beneficiaries face a double financial blow: they are paying both monthly home loan installments and rent for their current accommodations. Meanwhile, the Jamshedpur Notified Area Committee (JNAC) and the Urban Development Department remained silent on the issue. Frustrated by the delay, the beneficiaries approached Roy, who promised to take up their cause.
Roy brought the matter to the attention of both Urban Development Minister Sudivya Kumar Sonu and Chief Minister Hemant Soren, pointing out that department officials were misleading the beneficiaries.
During Saturday’s meeting in Ranchi, Minister Sonu requested an additional 15 days, promising to deliver the keys before June 15, 2026. Trusting this assurance, Roy deferred his protest but urged the minister to strictly honor the deadline.
Previously, the Urban Development Minister had promised Roy that the government would distribute the keys by May 31. Roy had warned that if the department failed to meet that deadline, he would launch a hunger strike against the breach of promise on June 1 at the East Singhbhum DC office.
