Basti Bachao Samiti organizes march against administration’s ‘anti-encroachment drive’

Jamshedpur: Hundreds of residents of Chandinagar and Chhayanagar localities took out a march on foot from Chhayanagar Basti to the office of the Deputy Commissioner on Friday to seek protection against the so-called anti-encroachment campaign of the district administration. They handed a memorandum addressed to Governor Draupadi Murmu to the DC demanding intervention in the matter.

The agitators were led by the central general secretary of Jharkhand Vikas Morcha Abhay Singh. State Youth Congress secretary Rakesh Sahu was also present on the occasion. Both leaders alleged that the administration was trying to usurp the land of poor and under-privileged people of the state in the name of removing encroachment.

Sahu said Chief Minister Raghubar Das had changed his statement on the ownership issue. He said the people had demanded ownership of land and not lease.
The agitating leaders said the state government was waiting for the 2019 elections for displacing the people of various bastis. They said the government had not made any rehabilitation policy for the displacement victims.

Meanwhile, the DC on Friday said the district administration had no plans to demolish houses in Chandinagar and Chhayanagar. He said the people of the two localities should not pay heed to any rumours in this regard. He said the district administration would issue notice before launching such a drive.
