Jamshedpur: The tribal Ho community celebrated a historic milestone this Saturday as they marked the 50th anniversary of Baha Bonga at Cholagoda, Parsudih. The event was a vibrant display of nature worship, community bonding, and cultural preservation.
Empowering Tradition through Giving
A key highlight of the golden jubilee celebration was the distribution of traditional Ho sarees to local women. The initiative, organized by Dishom Guruji’s Sapne Foundation, was led by JMM leader Mahabir Murmu.
The gesture was met with immense gratitude from the villagers of Badhegoda, serving as both a gift for the festivities and a way to promote traditional tribal attire.
The Essence of Baha Bonga
Mahabir Murmu addressed the gathering, explaining that the Baha festival (also known as Sarhul) is deeply rooted in the reverence for nature.
Core Traditions of the Festival:
- Worship of Nature: Prayers are offered to trees, new leaves, and spring flowers.
- Spiritual Protection: Rituals involve honoring village deities and local spirits for the prosperity of the community.
- Rhythmic Unity: Group dances are performed to the traditional beats of the Mandar and Nagada.
“This festival is a symbol of our identity. I urge the younger generation to protect our language, customs, and heritage,” said Murmu during the celebrations.
Community Participation
The event saw a massive turnout of women and villagers. Several dignitaries were in attendance, including MLA representative Mithun Chakraborty, Saraswati Pinguwa, and Nitin Hansda, among others.
