Jamshedpur : The Chakradharpur railway division has started awareness among the passengers about keeping clean the A-category Tatanagar station. The railway officials carried out inspection at the station platforms and took task of those who were found littering the platforms.
The focus of the drive is to create awareness on not to throw waste or litter on railway station platforms; not to put litter on board trains at stations; not to throw waste on rail tracks and to create litter-free zones in and around the railway premises.
Assistant senior divisional commercial manager, Chakradharpur railway division, S Kole said that they have started the drive to ensure cleaniness and hygiene in trains, station premises, waiting room and other places, which include the station platforms.
Speaking to the reporters later, he said the drive has been launched to ensure more cleanliness at railway stations at Tatanagar, which are much cleaner as compared to other railway stations. It was informed on the occasion that anyone found consuming alcohol in train bogies or misbehaving in train will be liable to a penalty of Rs 500.
Other three railway stations where the cleanliness drive will shortly begun are Chakradharpur station, Bandamunda and Jharsugoda railway stations, all under the Chakradharpur railway division.
As per the new law, enforced by the Central government, passengers found either littering or defecating in the railway premises, defacing the notices, pasting of posters or stickers on walls are punishable offences with penalty of up to Rs 500, he added.
He noted that the railways was concentrating a lot on the importance for ensuring a clean environment at stations and on trains.
Over 50,000 passengers travel in over 80 mail and express trains that pass through the Tatanagar station everyday. Due to adverse condition in the railway communication, the passengers at times have to wait for long time at the railway platforms.
The drive will be held across the division and will create passenger awareness and drive home the advantages of maintaining a clean and healthy environment on trains and in the station premises. The Railway Ministry has issued a notification containing rules on prohibition of activities affecting the cleanliness and hygiene in the station premises along with penalties for contravention of these rules.
The division is also planning to utilise the services of volunteers from other walks of life designated as �Rail Mitra’ for guiding rail users. Posters and stickers carrying the message of cleanliness will be put up at stations and displayed prominently in trains.
