Meerut (IANS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave a massive boost to urban mobility on Sunday by flagging off the Meerut Metro and the Namo Bharat train at Shatabdi Nagar Station. This landmark event marks a turning point for regional connectivity within the National Capital Region (NCR), linking Delhi and Uttar Pradesh through high-speed, modern infrastructure.
A New Era for the Delhi-Meerut Corridor
The Prime Minister dedicated the entire 82 km Delhi-Meerut Namo Bharat Corridor to the nation. During the ceremony, he inaugurated several critical remaining sections of the Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS), including:
-
The 5 km stretch between Sarai Kale Khan and New Ashok Nagar in Delhi.
-
The 21 km stretch between Meerut South and Modipuram in Uttar Pradesh.
To mark the occasion, PM Modi took a metro ride to Meerut South Station, where he interacted with local students and passengers about the impact of the new transit system.
India’s Fastest Metro and Integrated Transit
In a first-of-its-kind initiative for India, the Meerut Metro operates on the same physical infrastructure as the Namo Bharat RRTS. This integrated model allows the Metro to reach operational speeds of 120 kmph, making it the fastest metro system in the country. Commuters can now cover the distance between Meerut South and Modipuram in approximately 30 minutes, even with all scheduled stops.
Meanwhile, the Namo Bharat trains—designed for speeds up to 180 kmph—will drastically slash travel times between Delhi and major hubs like Sahibabad, Ghaziabad, and Modinagar.
Connectivity and Multimodal Integration
The project transforms Sarai Kale Khan into a premier multimodal hub. This station now seamlessly links the RRTS corridor with:
-
Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway Station
-
The Delhi Metro Pink Line
-
Veer Haqeeqat Rai ISBT
-
The Delhi Ring Road
By commissioning three additional stations in Meerut—Shatabdi Nagar, Begumpul, and Modipuram—the government aims to decongest road traffic and significantly reduce vehicular emissions across the region.
A Vision for Sustainable Growth
Officials noted that sharing infrastructure between regional rapid transit and urban metro services sets a new global benchmark for public transport efficiency. These initiatives align with the government’s broader mission to enhance the “ease of living” through sustainable, high-speed infrastructure.
Following the inauguration, Prime Minister Modi is set to dedicate further development projects worth ₹12,930 crore before addressing a public rally later today.
