Automatic signal system to enhance train speed on Tatanagar-Kharagpur route

Jamshedpur: The South Eastern Railway Zone is set to introduce an automatic signal system between Tatanagar and Kharagpur, aimed at improving train speed and ensuring punctuality. To facilitate this, a junction box will be constructed and new cables will be laid along the 134 km stretch between the two stations. The project, estimated to cost around Rs 11.5 crore, has already received approval, and work is progressing swiftly. According to Aditya Kumar Chaudhary, Senior DCM of Chakradharpur Railway Division, this system will enable trains to run more efficiently and at higher speeds.

Currently, trains on the Tatanagar-Kharagpur route operate on an absolute signal system, which only clears the next train’s signal once the previous train has passed. However, with the automatic signal system, multiple trains can run on the same track with a gap of 500-800 meters, as the signal changes automatically after a train passes. This system will not only help in maintaining train speed but also allow for more trains to run on the same line.

The automatic signal system works by turning the signal green for the next train once the preceding train crosses a block. The signals are in red, yellow, and green, with equipment related to the signals housed in huts between each block. If any technical issue arises, the system alerts the following train, ensuring it stops for safety.

This system is already operational on the Tata-Rajkharsawan route, as well as in other parts of the country, including Jhansi and Bina. The upcoming implementation of the automatic signal system between Tatanagar and Kharagpur will improve safety and efficiency, making it easier for trains to run on time and at higher speeds.
