Artificial ponds for Durga Puja idol immersion in Jamshedpur

Jamshedpur, Oct 7: In a bid to protect the Subarnarekha river from pollution caused by idol immersions, the Jamshedpur Notified Area Committee (JNAC) has undertaken a unique initiative. A large artificial pond is being constructed on the banks of the Subarnarekha to serve as a designated immersion site during Durga Puja.

To facilitate access, a temporary path will be constructed, and the area will be adorned with light decorations. The deputy commissioner has urged all Puja committees, as well as citizens, to immerse their idols—whether from homes or pandals—in the artificial pond instead of the river. This eco-friendly initiative is part of the city’s broader effort to curb pollution during festival seasons.

“The artificial pond will help prevent the river from being polluted by materials left behind after idol immersions,” said Deputy Municipal Commissioner of JNAC Krishna Kumar.

In 2023, Durga Puja was celebrated at 424 locations across Jamshedpur. Among them, 324 Puja pandals were licensed, while 100 operated without licenses. In addition to the pandals, many citizens also worship Maa Durga in temples and at home. Traditionally, after the conclusion of the Puja, idols are immersed in rivers and ponds. However, this practice significantly increases water pollution levels, especially in the rivers. With this new measure, the city aims to minimize environmental damage while preserving its cultural traditions.
