HMPV Virus Alert: Jamshedpur on high vigilance as cases rise in India

Jamshedpur: The HMPV (Human Metapneumovirus) virus, wreaking havoc in China, has led to widespread panic across India, with six new cases reported within 24 hours. In response, special guidelines have been issued to all states, and districts like Ranchi, Deoghar, and East Singhbhum in Jharkhand have been placed on high alert. These regions, particularly Jamshedpur, see a high influx of people from all over the world due to the presence of major companies like Tata Steel. Given the history of Jamshedpur being the site of the first COVID-19 case in Jharkhand, authorities are urging heightened vigilance.

The district health department has alerted both private and government hospitals across the city to monitor for potential cases of HMPV. The virus is spreading rapidly, particularly among children, but can affect people of all ages. Dr. Sahir Pal, Civil Surgeon of East Singhbhum, emphasized the need for prompt action. “If any suspicious patient presents symptoms, it is crucial to immediately inform the surveillance department so that swift action can be taken,” he stated.

Similar to COVID-19, but less deadly

HMPV shares many similarities with COVID-19, including symptoms such as fever, cough, sore throat, and difficulty breathing, all of which can also be seen in common cold and flu cases. However, while HMPV can cause lung infections and increase the risk of pneumonia, it is not as deadly as COVID-19. The virus is especially concerning for children, who appear to be the most vulnerable.

Government advisory

In response, the government has issued a series of precautions to help limit the spread of HMPV:

Cover your mouth and nose with a handkerchief or tissue when coughing or sneezing.

Wash hands frequently with soap and water or alcohol-based sanitizer.

Avoid crowded places to reduce the risk of exposure.

Stay home if experiencing symptoms like fever, cough, or difficulty breathing.

Improve ventilation in rooms to minimize infection risks.

Stay hydrated and maintain a nutritious diet to support your immune system.

The district health department is closely monitoring the situation and has called for heightened awareness among the public. Health officials have been instructed to report any suspected cases immediately to ensure quick response and containment.
