AISSF welcomes HC order to set up commission to probe anti-Sikh riots in state

Jamshedpur, May 5: All-India Sikh Students Federation (AISSF) has welcomed the Ranchi High Courts directive to the Jharkhand Government to set up a one-man commission under a retired judge of the High Court to probe into the 1984 anti-Sikh riots in the state.

Addressing a press conference in the city on Thursday, state AISSF president Satnam Singh Gambhir said that in response to his civil writ petition (PIL) No. 5251 of 2013 in the Jharkhand High Court, the court has said that the Jharkhand Government must set up a one-man commission for disposal of 1984 Sikh riots cases. Gambhir said that since Jharkhand also witnessed bloodshed similar to that in Delhi during the riots, the proposed commission will help to give justice.

Gambhir said that the assassination of Indira Gandhi led to the 1984 massacre of numerous Sikhs in India. Sikhs in Bokaro, Dhanbad, Ranchi, Ramgarh and Adityapur (Seraikela Kharsawan district) were murdered, while their properties were destroyed.

He said that as per the FIR filed by the police, 90 Sikhs were killed in Bokaro alone. There were several families whose members became handicapped for life and lost means of livelihood.

Surprisingly the number of victims mentioned in FIR reports is different from what the government report claims. As against the death of 90 Sikhs in Bokaro, the government claims only 79 persons died there during the riots.
