Aero modelling show in Jamshedpur pays tribute to JRD Tata

Helicopters, quadcopters and aeroplanes attract students

Jamshedpur, July 29: Visiting the Sonari aerodrome on JRD Tata�s birthday has become a sort ritual in Jamshedpur over the years. The static aircraft display and aero modelling fulfills the celebration of JRD Tata�s birth anniversary in the city was the highlight.

The highlight of the celebration was traditional static aircraft display at the Sonari aerodrome along with members of Calcutta Aeromodelling Club showcasing a number of remote controlled planes.

Models of helicopters, quadcopters and aeroplanes were the main attraction at the Jamshedpur airport that marked JRD Tata�s 115th birthday. JRD was also India�s first licensed pilot and that is the reason why aircraft display forms an important part.

Senior officials from Tata Steel including airport functionaries along with students and youth from various schools and colleges from Jamshedpur assembled at the Tata Steel Airport to pay their respects and take part in the celebrations.

Srimanti Sen graced the occasion as Chief Guest and paid homage to the legend.

Srimanti Sen, social worker inaugurated the aircraft display, aeromodelling and the digital exhibition on JRD Tata at the Sonari aerodrome on Monday. Tata Steel chief of aviation Services & Sports, Ravi Radhakrishnan along with Gopal Prasad Chaudhary, Chief of Security & Brand Protection and Farzan Heerjee, Chief Protocol & Special Projects were present.

Addressing the students, Srimanti Sen said, �Jamshedpur has come alive with festive celebrations in various parts of the city in honour of the legend. JRD Tata loved children and he loved aircrafts. As the Father of Indian Civil Aviation, he was instrumental in setting up Tata Airlines which is now known as Air India. I must congratulate Tata Steel aviation department on the occasion for putting up such an excellent exhibition. This is an apt way to show respect to a great personality like JRD Tata.�

A short film on JRD Tata�s life showcasing the legend�s philosophy and his passion for flying played for the audience. The film laid out JRD�s contribution towards nation building and key aspects of his life and times. The Jamshedpur Aero-Modelling Club organized an interesting show which enthralled the crowd, specially the children present. The static aircraft display with all Tata Steel aircrafts lined up in their full grandeur was a beautiful sight indeed and proved to be a high point for the visiting students and others present at the airport. The aircrafts on display included 3 fixed wing aircraft and 2 helicopters.  In addition, Alchemist Aviation which is a pilot training institute based at Jamshedpur also had their aircraft on display.

More than 500 students from various private and government schools across the city learnt about flying and aircraft models like Bell 429 helicopter manufactured by Bell Helicopter Textron Canada Ltd., King Air B200GT, VT-JSR manufactured by Hawker Beechcraft Corp. Wichita, Kansas USA and Pilatus PC12/45, VT-IOO & VT-TAS manufactured by Pilatus Aircraft Ltd. Stans, Switzerland. Alchemist Aviation (Pilot Training Institute) Aircraft that were on display include- Cessna 152: The Cessna 152 is an American two-seat, fixed tricycle gear, general aviation airplane, used primarily for flight training and personal use. It was based on the earlier Cessna 150, including a number of minor design changes and a slightly more powerful engine running on 100LL aviation gasoline. Cessna 172: The Cessna 172 Skyhawk is an American four-seat, single-engine, high wing, fixed-wing aircraft made by the Cessna Aircraft Company. First flown in 1955, more 172s have been built than any other aircraft. Measured by its longevity and popularity, the Cessna 172 is the most successful aircraft in history. 

Platus PC12 Cessna 172R; Cessna 152 II; and Super King B200GT and other models of aircrafts were on display.
