Adityapur Municipal Corporation drivers go on strike

Jamshedpur, April 23: The drivers engaged in collecting the dust-bins have gone on strike under AdityapurMunicipal Corporation area have gone on strike. Work of dust-bins from door-to-door in the AMC area which was introduced a year ago has been suspended. Due to the strike the municipal wastes are pilling up at the house-holds, causing them much inconvenience. As many as 35 drivers who are engaged to carry dust-bins from each of the households have stopped working.

” We are yet to receive our salary despite working so hard we are deprived of our rights. We used to get salary on 16th of every month, but this month we have not year paid the salary.  We have, therefore, gone on strike for mounting pressure on our management,” said one of the drivers.

The driver, requesting anonymity said that they would resume their duty only after getting their monthly salary. At present they are facing tough times.

City manager, AMC, Jitendra Kumar confirmed about the strike being observed by the drivers engaged for carrying dust-bins. “We are trying to resolve the issue of drivers’ salary and it will be resolved soon. We have asked the drivers to resume their work as their salary will be paid by their contractors shortly,” said Kumar. Kumar said there are about 38,000 households under AMC area.

The city manager, when queried, said they charge Rs 50 to Rs 80 per house per month for collecting the dust-bins.  He said as the residents are paying money, they must be complaining if the dust-bins are not lifted daily.

According to the 2011 census, AMC has an official population of 1,73,789, but unofficially over three lakh people live in this municipal area which covers Adityapur and parts of Gamharia.

�Heaps of garbage and filth lie unattended in our locality but there is no one to listen. A drain is over flowing nearby our complex though I went to lodge a complained at corporation but despite assurances the situation remains the same.The stink and unhygienic atmosphere bothers commuters, especially pedestrians using footpaths along the roads. People inhale these particles and fell victim to various infectious disease,� said a resident.
