Adityapur bustee emerges as a ‘brown sugar’ hub, woman arrested

Jamshedpur, Oct 28: Adityapur Muslim Bustee has emerged as a brown sugar hub. Youngsters, including girls from Adityapur and different localities of the steel city, visit for banned drugs. Police have started taking strict action against those involved.

In a recent development, a 28-year-old woman was arrested for selling “brown sugar” and sent to judicial custody by Adityapur police. The woman was identified as Reshma Khatoon, the lady drug peddler had been picked up with 5.6 grams of brown sugar from her house on F – Road in Adityapur Muslim Bustee.

The police had also seized Rs 12,320 from her possession during the raid at the house. After the interrogation and getting it verified that the woman was in the trade of drug peddling, the police arrested her.

OC, Adityapur police station, Alok Kumar Dubey said they raided Reshma Khatoon’s house following a tip-off from a senior administrative officer of the Seraikela-Kharsawan.

Dubey stated that unlike other drug peddlers Reshma had no small packets containing the brown sugar and would sell the drugs by making the packets on the arrival of any customer at her home.

A police officer spoke of a multi-pronged strategy, targeting both the demand and supply sides of the drug traffic. This would involve cultivating sources among the student community and tracing the drug trafficking networks, located mostly in the State. “There has been a drastic change in the pattern of consumption from natural psychotropic substances to chemical compounds as is evident from recent cases,” he noted.

With the rising alcohol and drug addiction among adolescents in the steel city being a major cause of concern, medical experts and counsellors have stressed the need for coming out of the denial mode and imbibing strong family values so that children do not fall prey to peer pressure.

Officials attribute the boom in the drug culture to the pumping in of money from the Gulf countries as well as to the boom in the realty sector.
