A safer Jamshedpur begins with each one of us

Neeraj Kumar Sinha

Road safety is not merely a set of rules—it is a shared responsibility, a collective discipline, and above all, an expression of care for our families and our community.

Last year alone, 273 road accidents and 176 fatalities were recorded in East Singhbhum. Alarmingly, over 100 lives were lost simply due to non-use of helmets or seat belts. These are not just statistics; they represent fathers, mothers, children, and friends whose lives were cut short. Most of these tragedies were entirely preventable.

Our Collective Responsibility

Tata Steel, in close partnership with the district administration and traffic authorities, has been relentlessly working to improve road safety—both within the city as well as across plant and township areas. These efforts include infrastructure upgrades, awareness campaigns, technology-based monitoring, and continuous engagement with communities.

However, no system, technology, or enforcement can succeed without responsible public behaviour.

Jamshedpur’s Accident-Prone Zones: An Alert for All Citizens

There are several high-risk and accident-prone locations that require heightened caution:

Agrico Traffic Signal, Mango Roundabout, Sai Mandir Road, Bistupur, KS Link Road. Jugsalai Main Road, Adityapur Main Road

These stretches frequently witness accidents due to speeding, poor lane discipline, uncontrolled turns, and pedestrian conflicts. Citizens are advised to slow down, avoid risky overtaking, and strictly adhere to traffic signals and pedestrian crossings.

Roadside Parking: A Growing Safety Concern

A serious and growing challenge in Jamshedpur is unauthorised and improper parking on main roads, especially around, Bistupur Market, P M Mall areas, Sakchi Market and Tempo stands.

Roadside parking in these congested zones significantly reduces available carriageway width, leading to bottlenecks, sudden swerves, pedestrian spill-overs, and increased collision risk. What may appear as “convenient parking” for some often becomes a life-threatening obstruction for others.

Road safety is not only about how we drive—it is also about where and how responsibly we park.

Our Commitment at Tata Steel

At Tata Steel, safety is non-negotiable. Our ongoing initiatives include Improved Road engineering, signage, and markings across plant and township roads. Community outreach through schools, markets, and residential areas. Joint road safety audits with district police and transport authorities. Sustained awareness campaigns on helmet use, seat belts, and pedestrian safety

A Call to the People of Jamshedpur

I urge every citizen of our steel city to consciously adopt safer habits:

Wear helmets—front and rear. More than half of two-wheeler fatalities last year involved non-usage of helmets.

Use seat belts—always, even in the back seat. A simple click can save a life.

Never use mobile phones while driving. A second’s distraction can cause irreversible damage.

Respect pedestrians and cyclists. High-footfall zones demand patience and courtesy.

Follow traffic signals, lane discipline, and speed limits. Rules are designed to protect lives—not restrict freedom.

Park responsibly. Unsafe parking endangers everyone on the road.

My Perspective

As someone who has spent decades working on safety systems, investigations, and culture change, I can say this with conviction that most road accidents are not caused by lack of knowledge—but by momentary neglect, impatience, or misplaced confidence. A safer Jamshedpur does not begin with enforcement alone. It begins with each one of us making the right choice—every day, every journey.

Together, let us build roads that are safer, disciplined, and more humane—so that every citizen returns home safely.

Stay Safe. Drive Safe. Care for Life.
