Jamshedpur, Nov 1: In a proactive step towards controlling stray dog attacks and preventing rabies, the animal husbandry department of East Singhbhum has administered anti-rabies vaccines to 951 stray dogs during the ongoing 2025–26 fiscal year.
Officials hope that this vaccination drive will significantly reduce incidents of dog bites in the district.
District Animal Husbandry Officer Dr. Samarjit Mandal informed that the department has intensified its vaccination campaign following the Supreme Court’s stern directive to all states and union territories—except West Bengal and Telangana—to submit compliance affidavits regarding stray dog management.
The court expressed displeasure over the non-submission of affidavits by several states, warning that it may initiate direct hearings and actions if orders continue to be ignored.
In response, the East Singhbhum district administration has convened an important meeting with veterinary officers to expand the vaccination drive by organizing more anti-rabies camps across the district.
“We are also working to raise awareness among pet owners about the importance of vaccinating their dogs regularly,” Dr. Mandal added.
Veterinarian Dr. R.K. Singh explained that the anti-rabies vaccine (ARV) plays a crucial role in protecting both animals and humans.
“The vaccine builds immunity against the rabies virus, which can spread through a dog’s bite, scratch, or even a lick on broken skin. Since rabies is a fatal viral infection, preventive vaccination is essential,” he said.
According to departmental data, the Kadma area recorded the highest number of vaccinated dogs, followed by Mango and the Pet Clinic.
With the Supreme Court tightening its stance and local authorities stepping up vaccination and awareness measures, residents of East Singhbhum can expect a safer and healthier environment—both for people and animals.
