Jamshedpur: In light of the increasing cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) across the country, Jamshedpur is gearing up to tackle the potential threat. On Saturday, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) supplied 92 test kits to the Virus Research and Diagnostic Laboratory (VRDL) at Mahatma Gandhi Memorial (MGM) Medical College to confirm cases of the HMPV virus.
The testing will commence on Monday, as informed by MGM Medical College Principal Dr. Diwakar Hansda. He stated, “Updated information about the HMPV virus is continuously coming in. We are preparing accordingly. As per ICMR guidelines, five suspected patients will be tested every week to prevent the spread of infection.”
While no confirmed cases have been reported in the city yet, health authorities are taking precautionary measures. The district surveillance department has been informed and preparations are in place to ensure easy sample collection from hospitals across the city. The guidelines from ICMR suggest that tests will focus on five suspected cases weekly until more confirmed patients are identified.
The symptoms of HMPV include cold, cough, fever, and other respiratory issues. The increasing number of patients at MGM Hospital, some of whom show symptoms similar to HMPV, has prompted the urgent need for testing. With the arrival of test kits, the district is now ready to ramp up its surveillance efforts. The authorities aim to contain the spread of this virus with prompt identification and monitoring.
The situation is under close watch, and further guidelines will be issued as new cases emerge.
