70 year-old woman dies in road mishap at Sakchi

Jamshedpur: A 70 year old woman, identified as Chandravati Devi, a resident of Kasidih under Sakchi PS, died in a road mishap near Howrah Bridge, Sakchi, on Kalimati Road, here on Saturday.

Another woman, one Mainavati Devi, was seriously injured in the mishap. She was taken to MGM Hospital where her condition was critical.

Sources said the incident occurred around 11 am when the two women were crossing the main road. As the two tried to cross, a speeding four-wheeler, a Tata-Sumo, knocked them down. Chandravati Devi succumbed to critical injuries at the scene while the other woman was seriously wounded, sources said.

Police confiscated the killer vehicle whose driver escaped from the scene after parking the vehicle nearby.
Irked over the mishap, local residents blocked the main road for several hours to demand compensation for the next of kin of the deceased and arresting of the errant driver.

Jamshedpur Lok Sabha Youth Congress vice president Rakesh Sahu led the agitation and sought arresting of the driver as soon as possible. He said the accident victims belonged to poor families.

The body of the deceased was sent to MGM Medical College after the officer in-charge of Golmuri police station reached the agitation venue and assured to get the compensation for the next of kin of the deceased paid within 24 hours.
