Jamshedpur, Jan 5: More than 56 lakh women in Jharkhand are set to receive ₹5,000 each in their bank accounts this January under the Chief Minister Maiya Samman Yojana. This scheme, launched by Chief Minister Hemant Soren in August 2024, aims to empower women across the state by providing direct financial assistance.

Initially, the scheme offered Rs. 1,000 to each beneficiary. However, following the formation of a full majority government in the 2024 Jharkhand Assembly Elections, the Hemant Soren-led cabinet approved an increase in the monthly amount to Rs.2,500.

A government official stated, “This decision reflects the state government’s commitment to uplifting women and ensuring financial stability for their families. The increased assistance is expected to have a positive impact on women’s livelihoods and household welfare.”

The double instalment for December 2024 and January 2025 will be credited to beneficiaries’ accounts this month. The December instalment transfer was delayed due to the cancellation of a December 28 event following the demise of Dr. Manmohan Singh. This delay has resulted in a total payout of Rs. 5,000 to each beneficiary in January.

Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) National General Secretary and Chief Spokesperson Supriyo Bhattacharya stated that social security is a top priority for the Hemant Soren government. He emphasized, “Empowering women economically is a key goal of the INDIA Alliance government in Jharkhand. The state government is focused on promoting women’s empowerment, and all promises made to the people will be fulfilled.”

The Chief Minister will distribute the honorarium at a grand ceremony in Namkum. The programme is now scheduled for January 6, with preparations reportedly complete.

Beneficiaries across the state have expressed gratitude for the increased support. Sunita Devi, a resident of Ranchi, said, “This amount will help me meet household expenses and plan for my children’s education. It’s a great relief.”
