Jamshedpur, Oct. 1: The city police have decided to additional install 55 CCTV cameras at various strategic points and on important intersections across the steel city soon.
At present, there are 155 surveillance cameras installed by East Singhbhum district police in leading localities like Bistupur, Sakchi, Golmuri, Mango and Jugsalai. But, the number of such cameras will go up to 210 in another one month or so.
Revealing about the initiative, senior superintendent of police, AnoopBirtharay said that they have decided to install more surveillance cameras as several strategic points in other localities like Sidhgora, Sonari, Kadma, Bagbera and Telco area needed to be covered.
“We want to spread the reach of surveillance. The CCTV cameras are proving to be crucial for detection of crime and also determining fault of any vehicle rider in the event of a road mishap. We want to spread the reach of the cameras,” said Birtharay.
“The project for installation of CCTV cameras is being worked out jointly by a private firm and the district police, and the process of installation of the gadgets will start soon. This is the fourth phase of the project. The CCTV cameras have helped to instill fear amongst the law breakers. It is also helping us to controlling traffic and identifying of errant riders involved in accidents,� noted a police official.
According to him, the roads in important localities like Bistupur, Sakchi and Golmuriwere given priority of the CCTV camera installation and in the later stage the localities with lesser civic importance have been selected for the same. The camera will help in easily identifying people involved in anti-social activities in the area. The police department will ensure that the large number of CCTV cameras installed to monitor traffic offences is incorporated into the new system.
It is a testing time for the city police in the wake of a spurt in crimes like snatching, burglary and group clashes in the city. Taking lesson from the past incidents the district administration is not ready to take any chance on the security front. Patrolling has been increased at the Kadma-Sonari Link Road and also along the road leading to the JRD Tata Sports Complex in the morning. Joggers’ Park at Kadma-Sonari Link Road is a point where a large number of men and women use to come for walking in the morning and also in the evening.
