Jamshedpur, Jan 31: Police have arrested five accused from Durgapur in West Bengal in connection with the theft of copper worth lakhs from Ghatshila Iron Plant located in East Singhbhum district. The police have taken them to Jamshedpur on transit remand. It is said that the Chakulia police station has taken this action in the case of theft of goods on January 24.
After the arrest, all the accused were produced in the Durgapur Subdivisional Court. After this the police left for Jamshedpur with the accused. The accused include Chinmay Dhiwar, resident of Maya Bazar of DTPS, Rajkumar Chaudhary, resident of Waria Chai Basti, Manjeet Kumar Ram, Arun Kumar Ram and Yasin Ahmed, residents of Kali Mandir Basti of Waria Mana Man.
A case of robbery has been registered against the accused at Chakulia police station in East Singhbhum. According to police sources, a syndicate of iron and copper theft is going on from Jharkhand to Bengal. Criminals belonging to the same syndicate carried out a robbery incident on the night of 24 January at a plant in Chakulia police station area.
During the incident, the criminals had taken the security personnel of the plant hostage. After this, about 6 tonnes of copper kept inside the plant had escaped. The value of the looted copper is estimated to be more than 20 lakhs. The owner of the plant had lodged a complaint of robbery at Chakulia police station on January 25. Based on the complaint, the police started investigation into the matter.
During the investigation, the police arrested some criminals from the area and interrogated them. On their behest, the team reached Durgapur. The team consisted of 5 police officers. The team raided an iron godown located on the banks of Kada Road river with the help of Durgapur Police. A laborer named Yasin Ahmed, who worked in the warehouse, was taken into custody. After questioning, the people involved in the incident were arrested from different areas. During the raid, the stolen copper was recovered from the godown.
Chakulia Police Incharge Avinash Kumar said that there have been indications that the iron mafia of Durgapur is involved in the loot of lakhs of copper stolen from the plant. Some people have already been arrested in this case. Soon other criminals of other gangs involved in this case will also be arrested.
