401 driving licenses suspended in May in Jamshedpur, Rs 39 lakhs fined collected for traffic rule violations

Jamshedpur, June 27: The District Traffic and Road Safety Committee held a crucial meeting today under the chairmanship of the Deputy Development Commissioner, Manish Kumar, with the primary agenda of reducing road accidents and improving road safety within the district.

The alarming rise in road accidents in recent months has prompted the district administration to take proactive measures to address this pressing issue. Recognizing the significance of collective efforts, the committee deliberated on a range of strategies aimed at enhancing road safety and minimizing accidents within the district.

District Transport Officer  Dinesh Ranjan, District Education Officer Nirmala Barelia and other related departmental officers and stakeholders were present in the meeting. In the review of road accidents, it was revealed that in most of the accidents on the National Highway, driving at uncontrolled speed and driving in the wrong direction were the main reasons. There were 35 road accidents in the month of May in which 20 people died and 17 were injured. In hit and run cases, so far compensation has been paid to 22 victim families, 16 are under process. The District Transport Officer directed to speed up the process and pay the compensation as soon as possible.

Action was taken to suspend 401 driving licenses in the month of May on the recommendation of Traffic DSP. At the same time, a fine of Rs 39 lakh 15 thousand 350 was collected from those caught violating the traffic rules. A report was sought regarding the progress in the guidelines given earlier regarding the installation of traffic signals at 07 places in the urban areas.

Instructions were given to install huge hoardings of accident prone areas at the six black spots identified earlier in the district. The education department was directed to conduct an awareness campaign in all private and government schools against the use of two wheelers by school children below the age of 18 years.

The Deputy Development Commissioner said that by forming Road Safety Clubs in all the schools, painting, writing competitions and distribution of pamphlets should be organized every Saturday to create awareness about road safety. In order to avoid road accidents due to drunk driving on NH and State Highways, instructions were also given to take continuous raid action against illegal sale of liquor in line hotels and dhabas.

During the meeting, statistics on recent road accidents were presented, emphasizing the need for immediate action. The committee reviewed accident-prone areas, identified common causes of accidents, and explored potential solutions to mitigate risks effectively.

The Deputy Development Commissioner highlighted the urgency of collaborative efforts and urged all stakeholders to actively contribute to the implementation of the proposed measures. The committee emphasized the need for ongoing monitoring and evaluation of the initiatives to assess their effectiveness and make necessary improvements.

 With the conclusion of the meeting, the District Traffic and Road Safety Committee is set to implement the proposed strategies, collaborating closely with all relevant departments and stakeholders.
