Jamshedpur, March 26 : The police arrested a 40-year-old man was arrested today for extortion calls to a doctor demanding Rs 5.5 lakh. P K Hota, the doctor posted at the Tata Steel Tubes division and resident of Chenab Road in Sakchi had sought police help.
Deputy superintendent of police (city) Animesh Nathani today said that the accused who is a resident of Padma Road in Kadma had made the extortion call on March 22, leading the doctor to lodge an FIR with the Sakchi police.
” We are investing the incident. The accused Manprit had not only called the doctor, but had also called his wife and had also sent WhatsApp messages demanding ransom on the cell-phone of the doctor’s wife.
Then only the doctor came to the Sakchi police station and lodged the FIR, leading us to swing into action,” said the senior police officer.
The accused threatened both the doctor and his family of dire consequence if his demands were not met. Nathani said the arrest was made possible after they had put the cell-number of the accused on tracking.
The doctor is a senior physician and runs a clinic at his residence .The accused might have collected the cell-number of the doctor and his wife and had made the abortive attempt to extort money in the name of gangster Akhilesh Singh.
A senior police official said that the gangster Akhilesh Singh who is the most wanted person on the list of wanted criminals is on the run.
The City DSP, however, stated that they are getting it verified whether the accused had any connection with gangster Akhilesh who is on the run.
