Remembering Teejan Bai: Her Legendary 2014 Jamshedpur Tour Inspired Youth

Jamshedpur: The legendary Pandwani exponent and Padma Vibhushan awardee Teejan Bai sowed the seeds of Indian folk culture into the minds of thousands of local students and fans in 2014 when she performed in the Steel City. Her historic five-day stay in the city remains as vivid as ever in the collective memory of Jamshedpur.

It was November 2014 when this maestro arrived in the Steel City as part of the Virasat program, jointly organized by SPIC MACAY and Tata Steel. The five days spanning November 3 to November 7 turned into a veritable cultural festival for the region.

The journey kicked off with a spellbinding performance at the expansive grounds of Vidya Bharati Chinmaya Vidyalaya (Telco), leaving thousands of students completely awestruck.

During her tour, she performed at 10 diverse locations, reaching out to over 4,200 students. Her itinerary covered:

  • Tata Auditorium, Bistupur
  • Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya, Potka
  • Sido-Kanhu School, Dimna
  • Rural schools in Ghatshila, Sundarnagar, and Musabani
  • High schools in Gitilata and Tirildih

When the Mahabharata Came Alive on Stage

The moment Teejan Bai stepped onto the stage with her traditional Tambura, the entire atmosphere morphed into the epic era of the Mahabharata. Under her mastery of the Kapalik style, the red-tasseled Tambura in her hand seamlessly transformed—one second it was Arjuna’s legendary bow Gandiva, and the next, the mighty mace of Bhima.

Local art enthusiasts fondly recall her rendition of the poignant Draupadi Cheerharan (the disrobing of Draupadi). Her booming voice, fierce expressions, and unique theatrical movements sent shivers down the spines of the audience.

Her infectious energy captivated everyone equally, breaking barriers between elite urban auditoriums and modest rural school grounds. After every performance, curious school children would surround her, and she would answer their questions with immense warmth and motherly affection.

A Timeless Message: Reclaiming Cultural Roots

Local theater artists and cultural activists note that Teejan Bai’s visit to Jamshedpur was more than just a series of performances; it was a major movement to reconnect the younger generation with their roots.

“No matter how modern we become, we have no identity if we cut ourselves off from our cultural roots. Pandwani belongs neither to you alone nor to me—it belongs to the entire nation. We must take immense pride in this unique heritage.” — Teejan Bai (During her Jamshedpur Tour)

Having broken rigid societal shackles and stereotypes to establish her identity on the global stage, Teejan Bai’s life story served as a massive inspiration, particularly for young schoolgirls in rural belts like Potka and Musabani.

Though the legendary artist has left her mortal coil, the torch of Pandwani she lit in the hearts of Jamshedpur’s youth will continue to burn bright for generations to come.
