3 Deaths in 48 Hours Spark Outrage at MGM Hospital

 

Jamshedpur: Mahatma Gandhi Memorial (MGM) Medical College Hospital has come under intense public scrutiny after three patient deaths within a span of 48 hours triggered widespread outrage and fresh allegations of negligence against the hospital administration.

The latest incidents have raised serious concerns regarding patient care, medical decision-making, and the availability of basic facilities at the state’s premier government hospital. Family members of the deceased staged protests on the hospital premises, accusing authorities of negligence and administrative failure.

One of the deceased, Shravan Kumar of Kanu Bhatta in Bhuiyandih, was brought to MGM Hospital on Sunday after suffering from severe swelling in his leg. According to his family, doctors examined him, administered medication, and bandaged the affected area before advising that he could either be admitted or taken home.

His younger brother, Ashish Kumar, alleged that the family followed the doctors’ advice and took him home, but his condition deteriorated rapidly later in the day. When he was rushed back to the hospital, doctors declared him dead.

The incident has prompted several questions from the family, who claim they were never informed about the seriousness of Shravan’s condition. They have demanded a fair and impartial inquiry into the circumstances surrounding his treatment and subsequent death.

In another incident, the family of a diabetic child from Adityapur alleged gross negligence and lack of basic facilities after the child died during treatment at MGM Hospital. The grieving relatives claimed that despite repeated requests, no stretcher was provided to transport the body from the ward.

According to family members, they were sent from one department to another in search of assistance but received none. Eventually, they were forced to carry the child’s body in their arms out of the hospital. They further alleged that no hearse service was made available, compelling them to arrange private transportation to take the body home.

The incident has intensified criticism of the hospital’s infrastructure and administrative preparedness, with many questioning how such basic facilities could be unavailable at a major government healthcare institution.

Public anger had already been brewing following another patient death on Saturday that also led to protests by relatives. With three deaths reported within two days, concerns over the hospital’s functioning have deepened considerably.

The back-to-back incidents have once again put MGM Hospital’s healthcare delivery system under the spotlight. As allegations continue to mount, citizens and patient families are demanding accountability, improved medical services, and immediate corrective measures.

As of the filing of this report, the hospital administration had not issued any detailed statement addressing the allegations or the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
