Ranchi: In a landmark breakthrough against Left-Wing Extremism in Jharkhand, 27 active naxals surrendered before the Jharkhand Police on Thursday under the state government’s rehabilitation initiative “Operation Navjeevan.” The surrender, described by security officials as one of the biggest setbacks suffered by Maoist groups in recent years, has significantly weakened the operational network of CPI (Maoist) and Jharkhand Jan Mukti Parishad (JJMP) in the dense forest regions of Kolhan, Saranda, and Gumla.
The surrendered extremists deposited 16 firearms and 2,857 rounds of live ammunition before police authorities, marking one of the largest recoveries through a surrender operation in the state.
Police officials said the operation reflects the growing success of coordinated anti-naxal strategies being jointly carried out by Jharkhand Police, CRPF, CoBRA, Jharkhand Jaguar, and intelligence agencies across the state’s red corridor.
25 CPI (Maoist) Cadres from Misir Besra Squad Among Those Who Surrendered
According to the official statement issued by Jharkhand Police Headquarters, 25 of the surrendered extremists belonged to the banned CPI (Maoist), including members directly linked to the strike squads of top Maoist commanders Misir Besra alias Sagar Ji and Asim Mandal.
The surrendered Maoist contingent included:
- 06 Sub-Zonal Committee Members (SZCM)
- 06 Area Committee Members (ACM)
- 13 Armed Squad Members
Security agencies stated that the surrendered cadres were highly valuable operatives due to their extensive knowledge of forest routes, underground hideouts, supply chains, and operational movement inside the difficult terrain of Chaibasa, Kolhan, and Saranda.
Officials confirmed that most of these cadres were local recruits from West Singhbhum and Giridih districts who had joined extremist outfits several years ago.
JJMP Also Suffers Major Setback
In another important development, two senior cadres of the Jharkhand Jan Mukti Parishad (JJMP) also surrendered before authorities from Gumla district.
The JJMP cadres included:
- One Sub-Zonal Committee Member
- One Area Committee Member
They surrendered one firearm and 130 live cartridges during the operation.
Police officials said the simultaneous surrender from two separate extremist outfits indicates the declining influence of insurgent organizations across Jharkhand.
Massive Recovery of Arms and Ammunition
The surrendered extremists deposited a huge stockpile of weapons and ammunition before police authorities.
The recovered arsenal included:
- 17 firearms
- 2,987 live cartridges
- Several operational materials linked to Maoist activities
Security agencies stated that the recovery of such a large quantity of ammunition reflects the operational preparedness of extremist groups and highlights the seriousness of the threat that existed in the region.
Officials believe the surrender has significantly disrupted the firepower and logistical capability of Maoist squads operating in the Saranda belt.
Continuous Security Pressure Forced Cadres to Surrender
Senior police officers stated that the mass surrender was not an isolated development but the outcome of continuous tactical operations and growing pressure on Maoist groups.
The establishment of 21 Advanced Camp Locations (ACLs) and Forward Operating Bases (FOBs) deep inside Saranda forests has drastically reduced extremist movement and weakened their control over local areas.
Joint operations by CRPF, CoBRA, Jharkhand Jaguar, and district police have intensified surveillance and restricted access to forest corridors traditionally used by Maoist squads.
According to police sources, many cadres had become mentally exhausted due to constant movement, fear of encounters, lack of supplies, and increasing isolation inside forest zones.
Internal Exploitation and Frustration Triggered Collapse
Investigations and intelligence inputs revealed that severe internal exploitation within Maoist organizations also played a major role in the surrender.
Police officials said lower-rung cadres were facing:
- Continuous mental and physical harassment
- Lack of medical facilities
- Food shortages
- Increasing pressure from senior commanders
- Forced extortion activities
- Fear of elimination during security operations
Officials stated that many cadres had become disillusioned with the violent ideology and no longer believed the movement had a future.
The state government’s surrender and rehabilitation policy provided them an opportunity to return to mainstream society.
Surrendered Cadres Linked to Major Attacks
Security officials confirmed that several surrendered cadres were associated with major extremist incidents carried out in Jharkhand over the last four years.
Attack on Former MLA Gurcharan Nayak
In January 2022, Maoist squads ambushed former MLA Gurcharan Nayak during a football tournament in Goilkera. Two security personnel were killed during the attack and their service weapons were looted.
Explosives Loot in 2023
In March 2023, Maoist squads raided explosives magazines in Meralgarha and Baljodi areas, looting nearly 7,000 detonators and large quantities of commercial explosives.
Deadly IED and Ambush Attacks
The surrendered network was also linked to:
- The August 2023 Tonto encounter in which two Jharkhand Jaguar personnel were martyred
- The March 2025 Marangponga IED blast that killed Sub-Inspector Sunil Mandal
- The April 2025 Ratamati explosion in which Jharkhand Jaguar constable Sunil Dhan lost his life
- The March 2026 Kolbanga IED attack that injured CoBRA Assistant Commandant Ajay Mallick
- The April 2026 Dalaigadha blast that injured six CoBRA commandos
Officials believe the surrender has effectively dismantled the field network responsible for several of these violent incidents.
Major Successes Already Achieved in 2026
Jharkhand Police released operational statistics highlighting the ongoing success of anti-naxal campaigns in the state.
Anti-Naxal Operations in 2026
- Active extremists arrested: 44
- Extremists surrendered before Thursday: 29
- Naxals killed in encounters: 22
With the surrender of 27 additional cadres, officials believe the state’s anti-extremist campaign has entered a decisive phase.
