2 children drowned, woman missing in north Bihar flash floods

Patna: An elderly woman was feared died in boat mishap and two children were drowned Champaran region amid the fear of flood in parts of Muzaffarpur, East Champaran, Gopalganj, West Champaran districts where water level in rivers passing through the region kept rising ominously, officials said on Saturday.

In a boat mishap in Bihar’s Bagaha subdivision, while a 55-year-old woman, identified as Maya Devi, wife of Vishnu Sharma who hailed from Parasauni village went missing, five others swam to safety after the boat in which they were travelling capsized in the Gandak river near Sichai Bhawan in Piprasi block on Saturday morning.

“They all are involved in fishing trade and were going to Diara area when the boat capsized. A woman is nowhere to be found after the incident. We have pressed SDRF team rescue her,” said Shivam Kumar, circle officer (CO), Piprasi.

In the meantime, a majority of rivers namely the Gandak, Masan, Pandarai and Sikarahana are in full swing following the discharge of 2.9 cusec of water from Gandak barrage in Valmikinagar in West Champaran on Saturday aided with incessant rain in the catchment area of Nepal and Champaran region, prompting the district administration to sound alert in the flood prone area.

Dr. Anupama Singh, sub-divisional magistrate (SDM), Bagaha on Saturday instructed embankment engineers to continuously inspect the embankment. “Instructions were given to complete the preparations. All medical officers were instructed regarding the availability of essential medicines and veterinary officers were instructed to keep essential medicines available for the animals. In view of the rise in water level, the leaves of all the officers and employees have been deferred. Miking is being done to alert the people,” said the sub divisional magistrate.

In yet another incident, two minors, Aman Kumar and
Deepanshu Kumar were drowned in a a pond at Parasauna village under Sagauli police station of the district as they missed to fathom the deepness of the pond, said Kundan Kumar, circle officer (CO), Sagauli.

In Muzaffarpur district, the Bagamati river swollen following the incessant rain in Nepal and its other catchment areas.

Meanwhile, the district administration in East Champaran and Gopalganj have sounded alert in anticipation of rise of water in the Gandak and its tributaries following the discharge of 4 lakh cusec of water in Devpur in Nepal. “The water is expected to enter the Indian territory through Valmikinagar in West Champaran around Saturday late evening or so,” said an officer.
