Youths taking into crime to fuel addiction in Jamshedpur

Jamshedpur, Oct 7: Jamshedpur residents are sounding the alarm as a disturbing trend grips the city—young boys, some barely into their teens, are turning to crime to feed their escalating addiction to drugs and alcohol.

In a shocking development, these boys, driven by their desperation for substances like brown sugar, cocaine, and alcohol, have spiraled into a life of crime. The lure of these intoxicants has turned them from students to street criminals overnight, casting a dark shadow over various neighborhoods.

On Monday, Jamshedpur Police once again found themselves confronting this grim reality. Five young men, aged between 19 and 24, along with three minors, were arrested in connection with a series of abductions and robberies. Their chilling motive? To fund their drug and alcohol habits.

The senior superintendent of police (SSP), Kaushal Kishore, said, “A total of five youths, residents of the adjoining district Seraikela-Kharsawan’s Adityapur, have been arrested for several crimes committed in recent days.”

The SSP further added that these youths used to pick fights with school-going students and abduct them on their bikes. “They would let them go after looting their mobile phones and money,” he added.

The Jamshedpur police have recovered the bikes and scooters used in the crimes, along with seven mobile phones from the arrested individuals.

Speaking to The Avenue Mail, Jamshedpur City SP Rishab Garg said, “All those arrested are aged between 19 and 24 years.”

The SP added that during questioning, the arrested youths confessed that they carried out the crimes to buy drugs and alcohol.

In recent months, the Jamshedpur police have arrested several people involved in the illegal drug trade. Garg further mentioned, “To keep the city drug-free, we have formed a special team to monitor and apprehend individuals attempting to sell drugs. In recent days, we have nabbed several individuals, both from the city and other states, who were engaged in drug trafficking.”
