XLRI imparts lessons on Self Defense to womenfolk

Jamshedpur : XLRI, the premier private B school in the nation organized a Self-Defense workshop as a part of Womens Day celebration.

The event was organized by CII Young Indians, a student committee in XLRI with youth empowerment and nation building as its goals. Entry to the event was free.

Given the current scenario in our country where there are multiple occurrences of sexual assault and harassment being reported, the safety of women is compromised. The main reason of conducting this workshop was to address this concern.

It was a three hour long session conducted by trainers from the famed Seigo kai karate do Association of India. They were brought all the way from Kolkata for conducting the session. The session drew widespread participation of the womenfolk in XLRI from faculty to the women workers and foreign exchange students.

During the workshop the trainers walked the participants through various easy to do techniques that will help them get out of tough situations. The next half of the session focused on how to repel attack from the unsavory elements of the society.

By the end of the session all the participants felt fairly confident that they were better prepared to handle some of the contingencies that might happen.

I have never done anything like this before in my life. Now with this training I feel I can escape from any tricky situation. I would definitely attend such a session if they conduct it next year said one of the participants who works as a gardener in XLRI.

We wanted to do something on Womens day that would empower the womenfolk. We felt such an initiative would be the most appropriate thing to do in the current scenario. We believe we would make a difference in these workers lives if we are able to teach them some of these basic self-defense skills said Arshdeep, Secretary of CII Yi XLRI Net.

The event ended at around 2 in the afternoon with a more confident set of people walking out of the session.
XLRI is the countrys premier management institute and has been consistently ranked among the top B-schools, alongside the IIMs. The college is one of the most prefered destinations for those wishing to learn the ropes of management.

XLRI Jamshedpur in collaboration with Yi (Young Indians) established the first Yi Net at XLRI Jamshedpur through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in April 2008. The Yi Net at XLRI is an initiative to empower the students to work towards the development of education, employability, environment, youth affairs and health sectors.
