Workshop on Paitkar Paintings at Srinath University

Jamshedpur, August 27: The Srinath University Department of Fine Arts on Saturday organised a workshop on Paitkar Paintings conducted by Jharkhand’s renowned folk painter Bijay Chitrakar.

Addressing the student participants at the workshop, Bijay Chitrakar explained the essence of folk paintings depicting various facets of traditional rural life in a stylized form that had made Paitkar paintings a distinctive form of expression.

Apart from the students of Srinath University’s Department of Fine Arts other participants in the workshop on Paitkar Paintings included those of ASMA India and the Tagore Academy.

 The participating students, under the expert guidance of Paitkar painter Bijay Chitrakar created engrossing images. The Paitkar maestro was assisted by Srinath University’s Department of Fine Arts’ Assistant Professors Nalien Chandra and Ganesh Mahto.

Elucidating further on the school of Paitkar paintings, Bijay Chitrakar stated, “Paitkar Painting is an ancient artistic skill that depicts the lifestyle of ancient times. People in the days of yore sang songs and portrayed their observations on Pata and hence the inherited name for this school of painting is known as Paitkar style. Paitkar Painting is made from natural colours and students should learn such artistic skills and enhance their knowledge of this form that has persevered through time in a silent but effective manner and that is why Paitkar Paintings continue to attract all segments of painters.”

Assistant Professor Nalien Chandra, while briefing the media informed, “Fine arts helps in giving form to an artist’s observation through his painting skills. Such workshops like the one on Paitkar Paintings that has been organized in Srinath University campus in Adityapur, enable students to enhance their knowledge and skills.”

Assistant Professor, Ganesh Mahato from the Department of Fine Arts stated, “Fine Arts has evolved tremendously as compared to earlier periods. In modern times that are marked by keen competition in any field of professional pursuit, fine arts has provided a vital platform for employment and students of the art schools are going ahead with making a name for themselves and making commendable financial gains.”

Before conclusion of the Paitkar Painting Workshop, Bijay Chitrakar during a questionnaire session with the participating students answered queries and provided valuable tips on enhancing painting skills.
