Worker severely burnt in Jamshedpur

Jamshedpur, Dec 4: A major accident occurred in Mango on Thursday afternoon due to alleged negligence on the part of the electricity department and Voltas, the company tasked with laying underground cables in the Azadnagar locality.

During maintenance work on an 11 kV transformer near Mango Gandhi Maidan, a worker sustained severe burn injuries after coming in contact with a live power line.

According to information, the transformer under repair is connected to two lines—Azadnagar and Kunwar Basti.

Before beginning the work, power supply from the Azadnagar feeder was switched off, but the Kunwar Basti line remained live. This oversight proved disastrous, as 24-year-old worker Raju Saini, a resident of Samastipur (Bihar), was struck by a high-voltage electric current, causing a loud explosion and leaving him critically burnt.

Saini was rushed to Mango Guru Nanak Hospital, where his condition is reported to be critical. The incident has once again highlighted serious lapses in safety protocols, technical coordination, and the accountability of officials within the electricity department. Local residents have pointed out that junior engineers and concerned officers of Mango Division-2 should have been fully aware of the feeder connections before allowing work to proceed.

The biggest concern now is the future of Raju Saini, a father of four young children. If he is left unable to work due to his injuries, who will take responsibility for supporting his family? Locals assert that both Voltas and the electricity department must provide adequate compensation to ensure the victim’s family does not fall into financial distress.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the need for strict adherence to safety standards and stringent action against negligent officials so that such accidents can be prevented in the future.
