Work starts to repair NH 33 towards West Bengal and Odisha

Jamshedpur : People travelling going from city towards West Bengal and Odisha can heave a sigh of relief with repair work commencing on the pot hole scarred NH-33 stretch between Dimna to Baharagora.

There has been no repair on this stretch of the NH-33 for more than three years. In monsoon the potholes develops into craters causing problem for the commuters on this stretch which sees heavy traffic movement going towards Odisha and West Bengal.

The state road construction department has begun plugging potholes and even out a rugged 71.8km stretch of NH-33 from Galudih, 25km from Jamshedpur, to Baharagora close to the Bengal border earlier this month with an investment of more than Rs 70 crore.

Principal secretary (road construction) Rajbala Verma informed that two Jamshedpur-based firms – M/s KK Builders Private Limited and M/s Triveni Engicons Private Limited – had been roped in for the highway job that holds out the promise of fewer accidents.

“We have received an NOC from the NHAI earlier this year and issued work order for repairing the dilapidated stretch between Mohulia (near Galudih) and Baharagora on Bengal border. We are routinely monitoring the quality and progress of work,” Verma said.

Funds sanctioned by Union surface road transport ministry would also be used in the road repair work.

In protest against the poor condition of the road and build pressure on the State government for taking up the proposed four lane construction work speedily on NH-33 JMM leaders sat on dharna at Dimna chowk on the NH.

ďWe would be using the wet mix macadam for repair of the NH-33. Such repairs would continue till the four lane work is completed. We hope that this repair would last this yearís monsoon. The repair work would cost to the tune of Rs 5 lakhs,Ē said an official associated with the work preferring anonymity.

The wet mix macadam is a roadbase material comprising crushed rocks and slag mostly premixed with controlled amount of water sufficient for adequate compaction. The wet mix is spread by a grader on the potholes and craters and compaction is done by a road roller. It is then left for setting and drying.

Roads reflect the health of the State, and most of the National Highways in the State are in a pathetic condition, thanks to the Centre apathetic attitude.

National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) – the associated office with the Union Ministry for the development of highways in the State has ordered construction and development of four sections of NH in the State.

Officials of NHAI said at present we are upgrading the highways to four-lane from Barhi-Hazaribagh, Hazaribagh-Ranchi (NH-33), Ranchi-Jamshedpur (NH-33) and Jamshedpur-Kharagpur (NH-32) on Build-Operate-Transfer basis.

Jharkhand has a total length of 1,805 km of National Highways passing through it, while that State had sent a proposal for widening and repair of NH-33, 75, 32 and 23.
