Ranchi, Oct 27: As the Jharkhand assembly elections draw near, political analysts are emphasizing the increasingly pivotal role that women voters are expected to play in shaping the outcome of the polls. Recent statistics reveal that Jharkhand boasts approximately 2.60 crore registered voters, among which there are 1.31 crore male voters and 1.29 crore female voters. This nearly balanced gender distribution highlights the competitive nature of the electorate and suggests that women will have a significant impact on the electoral process.
Both Chief Minister Hemant Soren and former Chief Minister Champai Soren are contesting from constituencies where the demographics favour female voters. Hemant Soren, acknowledging the importance of this voter base, stated, “Women voters are crucial to our democracy, and their participation can significantly influence the direction of our state.” His sentiment underscores the growing recognition among political leaders of the vital contribution women make to the democratic process.
In key constituencies such as Barhet and Seraikela, voter demographics illustrate a clear majority of female voters. In Barhet, there are over 2.25 lakh registered voters, including 1.15 lakh women, while Seraikela boasts 1.85 lakh female voters compared to 1.83 lakh male voters. This demographic shift signifies a changing political landscape, where women’s voices and choices will undoubtedly shape the strategies and outcomes of the elections.
Political parties are acutely aware of the significance of women voters and are actively tailoring their campaigns to engage this crucial demographic. With voting scheduled for two phases on November 13 and November 20, followed by vote counting on November 23, mobilizing women voters has become a top priority for both the ruling party and the opposition.
In a bid to attract female voters, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has launched the Gogo Didi Yojana, designed to compete directly with the state government’s Maiya Samman Yojana, which currently provides Rs 1,000 monthly to over 50 lakh women in the state. In an effort to strengthen their appeal, Chief Minister Hemant Soren promised that if his party is re-elected, the monthly financial support for women would be increased to Rs 2,500 starting in December.
In response to these initiatives, the BJP has pledged to deposit Rs 2,100 per month into women’s accounts should they win the elections. This promise illustrates the party’s commitment to addressing women’s financial needs and empowering them within the community, thereby recognizing their crucial role in the electoral process.
