Jamshedpur, Oct 27: Hundreds of women from the Jamshedpur East assembly constituency in Jamshedpur rallied on Sunday at the Agrico roundabout to protest an inflammatory comment made by Congress leader Dr. Ajoy Kumar against BJP candidate Purnima Sahu. Outraged by what they called a deeply disrespectful and anti-women remark, the protestors emphasized that Dr. Kumar’s statement insulted not only Sahu but also the values of Indian culture, where women are traditionally revered and respected. Led by social worker Vimala Sahu and activist Seema Das, the demonstrators called upon Dr. Kumar to apologize immediately, warning that failure to do so would lead to intensified protests and possible public confrontations.
The women highlighted Congress’s alleged track record of disrespect towards women, which they claimed contrasts sharply with the central government’s recent landmark achievement of passing a 33 percent women’s reservation bill under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. According to the protestors, this legislation symbolizes a significant step forward for Indian women in political and social spheres, a commitment they feel Congress has historically overlooked. Community members, including Kailashpati Mishra and Jaya Laxmi, criticized what they described as Congress’s double standards, asserting that such behaviour would not be tolerated.
The gathering included prominent local figures like Kalyani Sharan, Mamta Kapoor, and Chandrakanta Singh, among others, who vowed to continue their protest until Dr. Kumar issued a formal apology. United in their stand, the women expressed that any insult to women’s dignity would be met with firm resistance, as Indian women continue to advance in every sector and demand respect for their role in society.
