Jamshedpur: A woman lost her life and three others sustained serious injuries in a tragic road accident late Wednesday night near Gopidih on the Seraikela-Kandra main road. The accident occurred when a speeding truck allegedly went out of control and rammed into two motorcycles, triggering chaos and anger among local residents.
The incident led to a road blockade by villagers, resulting in long traffic jams on both sides of the road and heightened tension in the area.
Woman dies on the spot
According to eyewitnesses, the collision was extremely severe. The truck reportedly dragged the woman for nearly 100 metres after hitting the motorcycles, causing fatal injuries. She died at the scene before any medical assistance could be provided.
The condition of the three injured victims is said to be serious. They were rushed to Sadar Hospital by police and local residents for treatment.
Driver flees after accident
Following the accident, the truck driver allegedly fled from the spot along with the vehicle. Police teams launched a search operation soon after receiving information about the incident.
Officials said efforts are underway to trace the vehicle and identify the driver responsible for the accident.
Villagers block road, demand justice
The incident sparked outrage among local residents and family members of the deceased. Agitated villagers prevented police from taking custody of the body and staged a road blockade, demanding the immediate arrest of the absconding driver and adequate compensation for the victim’s family.
The protest led to the disruption of traffic movement on the busy Seraikela-Kandra route, with long queues of vehicles stranded for several hours.
CCTV footage under examination
Police officials stated that CCTV footage from the highway and nearby areas is being scrutinized to identify the truck involved in the accident and track its movement after fleeing the scene.
Investigators believe the footage may provide crucial leads in locating the vehicle and apprehending the driver.
Additional force deployed
As tensions escalated, additional police personnel were deployed to maintain law and order and prevent any untoward incident. Senior officials held discussions with villagers in an effort to restore normalcy and convince protesters to withdraw the blockade.
Police have assured residents that strict action will be taken against those responsible and that all legal procedures related to compensation and investigation will be carried out in accordance with the law. The investigation into the accident is currently underway.
