Jamshedpur : In a major road mishap a 40-year-old woman crossing the Marine Drive along with her grand-daughter was killed on the spot after being hit by a truck hit her along Kadma-Sonari- Marine drive on Tuesday morning.
The deceased was identified as Anita Devi, a resident of a Domuhani Bustee. The deceased’s grand-daughter, six-year-old Baby Kumari, , was also seriously injured in the mishap.
The local residents rushed the girl child to the MGM Medical College Hospital emergency, where she is recovering. The mishap took place when the deceased was returning home having taken a bath in the Subarnarekha river.
In protest against the mishap a section of local residents blocked the Marine Drive along the river-meet under Sonari police station area. The truck driver, managed to escape to get rid of the ire of the people.
�The residents lost cool on seeing the body with visible deep injuries and turned violent,� said a police sub inspector who was on the spot.
Over 100 bustee dwellers, including women squatted on the road. The protestors were demanded sufficient compensation to the bereaved family and also assurance from the administration for restricting the speed-limit of the trucks and trailers, and also other vehicle on the road, which is getting increasingly accident prone.
As a result of the mishap, long queue of trucks and trailers queued up on either side of the blockade site. As this was the prominent road for plying of trucks and trailers carrying industrial goods, this caused great inconvenience to the local residents and also others.
When the two-wheelers and pedestrians took to other routes, those in four-wheelers and three wheelers remained stuck up in the jam.
Deputy superintendent of police (headquarters-1) Jagdish Prasad also arrived at the blockade spot and promised that the administration will detect the truck involved in the mishap. Later the sub-divisional officer, Dhalbhum Prem Ranjan and arranged for making payment of initial compensation amount of Rs 10,000 to the victim’s family. SDO, Dhalbhum arrived at the blockade place and paid the deceased’s kin, leading the protestors to lift the blockade.
The residents complained that every since the Adityapur toll-bridge and marine drive came up movement of heavy vehicles, particularly trucks and trailers has increased leading to mishaps.
