Wild elephants kill four in Bihar

Patna, June 6 (IANS) Wild elephants went on a rampage in Bihar’s Bhagalpur district on Saturday for the second consecutive day, killing at least four people and leaving five others injured, police said.

“Wild elephants trampled four people to death in Bansitikar area near Sabour in Bhagalpur. Two people were killed by the elephants Friday in Bhagalpur. The wild pachyderms also damaged standing rabi crop, destroyed several houses and created fear and panic among the villagers,” a district police official said.

Bhagalpur is around 225 km from state capital Patna.

“It appears that wild elephants had ventured in rural parts of the district in search of water and food,” officials added.

The district administration has sought help of the forest department officials to capture the wild elephants believed to have strayed into Bihar from neighbouring Jharkhand’s forest.
