Jamshedpur, June 11: The Department of Geography, Karim City College, hosted an online webinar on the occasion of World Oceans Day. Dr. Ghazal Salahuddin, Assistant Professor, Department of Geography, Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi, was the keynote speaker. The theme of World Oceans Day, 2024 was ‘Catalysing action for our Oceans and Climate.’ The webinar was attended by Dr. Ale Ali, Head of the Geography Department of Karim City College along with Principal Dr. Mohammad Reyaz, Assistant Professors Dr. Farzana Anjum, and Dr. Pasarul Islam. More than 70 students took part in the webinar.
The webinar commenced with an introductory speech of Dr. Ale Ali. He informed the audience of the historical background of World Oceans Day– how it was first proclaimed at the Global Forum in Rio de Janeiro on June 8, 1992. The Principal of Karim City College, Dr. Mohammad Reyaz delivered the welcome address.
Guest speaker Dr. Ghazal Salahuddin while discussing World Oceans Day said, “We are celebrating Oceans Day to raise awareness about the importance of oceans and mobilize global action for their conservation. The oceans absorb most of the heat from greenhouse gases and this is the main reason for the rising temperatures of the oceans.”
He spoke about various human activities that were spoiling the beauty of the oceans including garbage, runoff, overfishing, et al. He confirmed that the best way to preserve oceans was to diminish direct waste disposal into them.
Post the session, Dr. Pasarul Islam, Assistant Professor conducted a question-and-answer session to address students’ doubts. Dr. Ghazal Salahuddin answered the queries. The webinar was coordinated by Dr. Farzana Anjum.
